The Baltimore Ravens ended what has been a tumultuous year and a half for Odell Beckham Jr. when they signed him to a one-year contract earlier this season. The former All-Pro ended up sitting out the entire 2022 season after he tore his ACL while playing for the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 56.
Dreams of landing another lucrative, multi-year contract after the New York Giants made him the highest-paid wide receiver in league history with a $95 million extension, were gone. Teams weren’t going to give a multi-year deal to a player with his injury history heading for another rehab stint.
While a few teams did meet with Odell Beckham Jr. during the 2022 season, nothing came to fruition. His first team, the Giants, Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills all had varying degrees of interest in bringing him in but ultimately no deal was reached.
Now a member of the Ravens, Odell Beckham Jr. is focused on 2023 and 2023 alone. He wants to show people that he can still play at a high level and is putting all of his effort and energy toward accomplishing that.
So much so, there is a chance that 2023 is his last in the NFL. In a piece from Dan Pompei of The Athletic, Odell Beckham Jr. revealed that he’s viewing the upcoming season with the Ravens as his last one as a professional football player.
“I’m thinking like this is my last year,” Beckham says. “I’m going to give it my all this year. And then if something happens after that, we can go from there.”
Players motivate themselves in different ways, but this is certainly an unorthodox one. Odell Beckham Jr. wants to put all of his being into this season knowing it could be his last as he isn’t sure what the future holds.
If he can return close to the level he was playing at when his last injury occurred with the Rams, there should be a market for him during the 2024 offseason. But, for that to happen, he needs to stay healthy and have a big season in Baltimore.
