Keep an Eye on T.Y. Hilton

The No. 1 receiver role for the Indianapolis Colts has long been held by T.Y. Hilton. The 2020 season will mark the final year of the five-year, $65 million contract extension he signed in 2015.

With Hilton entering a contract year, there has yet to be much talk about a possible extension getting done. The star wideout made it clear that it’s ‘up to Mr. [Jim] Irsay and Chris [Ballard] to get the job done’ when it comes to a potential deal.

The loyalty Hilton holds for the Colts is apparent–expressing ‘I want to be a Colt for life.’ He has been through many highs and lows during his time in Indianapolis and has never once tried to get out of town. That makes it difficult to envision him deciding to depart just for the sake of playing elsewhere in 2021.

Now, if the Colts do not end up offering a fair contract extension that presents fair value, the situation could change. A better team willing to provide a more substantial amount of compensation–giving a reason to consider departing.

If that were to happen, a potential backup plan for the Colts could be JuJu Smith-Schuster. There is a considerable age difference between the two players so at least it would set up the future.
