It’s Hard to Land High-Level QBs
The value of having a high-level quarterback should never be understated. That was something the Pittsburgh Steelers experienced first-hand when Ben Roethlisberger suffered a season-ending elbow injury last season and they were left with underwhelming options.
When looking at the Steelers’ roster, they simply have too good of a defense to be in a position to select an elite quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft. Their next quarterback will likely need to come through free agency or in a trade if they want one of the more talented options in the league.
A recent example of a team having a talented defense and adding a legendary quarterback was the Denver Broncos signing Peyton Manning. They managed to make two Super Bowl appearances together and that was after a tough neck injury.
It’s unlikely the Steelers would find themselves in a unique position to add a quarterback like Manning in free agency, which is why trading for a player like Aaron Rodgers makes sense in the future. The other recent examples featured players that have experienced declining impact.
