Steelers Have Underwhelming Options
After Ben Roethlisberger went down with his season-ending injury, there was a prime opportunity for players like Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges to step up and prove themselves. Both were first-year quarterbacks but didn’t provide much for reasons to have confidence in them.
The Steelers ended up totaling just 3,214 passing yards (31st) in 2019 and were the only team in the NFL to have more interceptions (19) than passing touchdowns (18). Roethlisberger threw one of those picks and didn’t have a touchdown, making the other QBs were just net neutral on the season.
Initially, the Steelers turned to Mason Rudolph after Roethlisberger went down. Overall, he made eight starts and while Pittsburgh posted a 5-3 record during those games, he threw for only 1,765 yards and 13 touchdowns.
As for Hodges, he ended up recording more starts (6) than touchdown passes (5) and that’s all that really needs to be said about that. Rudolph proved to be far more capable but neither quarterback showed they are ready to take over whenever needed.
