Ben Roethlisberger May Retire Soon

It’s reasonable to start questioning when Ben Roethlisberger may end up deciding to retire in the relative near future. He turned 38-years-old in March and is coming off a season-ending elbow injury, so general factors aren’t necessarily on his side.

It’s worth noting, Roethlisberger expressed that he is no longer feeling pain while throwing the ball ‘for the first time in years.’ That should certainly help him during the 2020 season but it’s a bit concerning that he has been having to throw through at least some pain in recent years.

The Steelers have become accustomed to relying on Roethlisberger at a very high volume and it’s possible that took a toll on his elbow. During the 2018 season, he totaled a league-most 675 pass attempts and has racked up 4,368 regular-season pass attempts since 2011.

While it remains to be seen when Roethlisberger will call it a career, it would be wise for the Steelers to at least start thinking about the possibility. The upcoming season appears very unlikely to be his last but beyond that, it’s certainly worth monitoring.
