3. Nick Mullens Underwhelms
The 49ers will be relying on Nick Mullens to lead the offense when they take on the Giants in Week 3. While he won’t be on the lineup for too long, San Francisco will need him to hold his own while Jimmy Garoppolo is sidelined.
Most recently, Mullens was last a starting quarterback in 2018 — during what was his rookie campaign. In his eight performances, he completed 176-of-274 (64.2%) pass attempts resulting in 2,277 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
There was little issue for Mullens to move the chains as he averaged 284.6 yards per game in 2018. However, he struggled to find the end-zone and failed to keep his turnovers down nearly enough. His same impact was on display when he entered the lineup in Week 2 against the Jets.
It’s difficult to envision Mullens putting up huge numbers in this matchup. He could move the ball well as he has shown in previous outings, but the 49ers will fail to put many points.
