How do the Bears plan on deploying their TEs?
Throughout the offseason, the Bears acted as if the tight end position was the only one that mattered. Even though they already had Adam Shaheen, Ben Braunecker, and Trey Burton on the roster, Chicago added Demetrius Harris, Jimmy Graham, and took Cole Kmet with their first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
At the least, the Bears traded Shaheen and released both Burton and Shaheen. Therefore, after the dust has settled, Chicago is left with a trio of Graham, Kmet, and Harris. So how does Nagy plan on utilizing his tight ends in the upcoming season? Could we see more 12 personnel from the Bears in 2020?
Last season, Chicago deployed 12-personnel on only 11 percent of their offensive snaps (third-lowest in the NFL in 2019). Given that, it’s uncertain if Nagy would alter his offense to prioritize the tight end position. But with the team paying Graham $8 million annually over the next two years and adding Kmet early in this year’s draft, they obviously believe in somewhat of a systemic change in 2020.
