Can David Montgomery be a workhorse running back?
Amid Chicago’s struggles on offense, David Montgomery was somewhat of a bright spot in the backfield. While running behind a subpar offensive line and averaging a mere 3.7 yards per attempt, Montgomery showed signs of being the Bears’ featured running back for years to come.
Coming out of Iowa State, Montgomery excelled at making defenders miss. And he did just that in his rookie season with the Bears. The 23-year-old running back would tally 28 broken tackles (tied for sixth-most in the NFL) and evaded 75 tackles (13th most among RBs in 2019).
Besides Montgomery, Tarik Cohen figures to continue having a prominent role in the offense as a receiving threat out of the backfield. Regardless of Cohen’s role, can Montgomery be an effective workhorse back for the Bears this season? To be fair, Montgomery’s success could be reliant upon the answer to the most important question that the Bears need to answer.
