Bears: 5 burning questions entering the 2020 NFL season

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Who will be the No. 2 cornerback alongside Kyle Fuller?

Similar to Robinson, Kyle Fuller is a player that doesn’t get his due despite being a consistent contributor at cornerback. Since entering the NFL in 2014 as a first-round pick out of Virginia Tech, Fuller has accumulated 74 pass breakups and 18 interceptions in the five seasons he’s played in (missed the 2016 season due to a knee ailment).

Fuller is under contract with the Bears through the 2021 season, giving them some continuity at the No. 1 cornerback spot. On the other hand, Chicago is likely going to have a battle in training camp before deciding who steps in alongside Fuller. Without a doubt, veteran Buster Skrine — barring an unforeseen event — will be Chicago’s nickel cornerback.

But with Fuller being the No. 1 cornerback and Skrine at nickel, that leaves the No. 2 spot up for grabs for Artie Burns and rookie Jaylon Johnson. Before joining the Bears, Burns failed to live up to expectations as a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Maybe a change of scenery can help Burns alter the outlook on his career. And Johnson is a talented rookie but the lack of an offseason could impede his chances to start in Week 1.
