Shaquil Barrett, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The edge position is arguably the weakest spot in the Giants depth chart and after Gettleman decided to look short term at this position this offseason, 2021 should make for the search for a long-term answer.
The Giants signed Kyler Fackrell to a one-year deal, in addition to signing Markus Golden on his one-year unrestricted free agent tender. Golden led the Giants in sacks in 2020 (10) while Fackrell wasn’t even a starter for the Green Bay Packers in 2019. Both Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines are on their rookie deals, but have yet to prove that they can be difference makers.
So why wouldn’t you want to go after one the best breakout stars at the position? Barrett led the NFL with 19.5 sacks and was tied for second in tackles for loss with 23. The franchise tag was placed on him this offseason, but the Bucs and Barrett couldn’t reach a deal and he’ll test free agency.
If the Giants’ edge rush flutters again in 2020, Gettleman will have no choice but to pull out the checkbook. And if Barrett can continue his success from 2020, he should be on the Giants’ radar.
