Number One Total Offense
When a team has a Hall of Fame-bound quarterback the likes of a Philip Rivers, having a prolific offense becomes an expectation. Los Angeles had just that last season. With Rivers at the helm, the Chargers led the league in overall passing yards.
The Chargers had a player in the top-10 of the NFL’s passing, rushing, and receiving leaders. Rivers was second only behind the 2017 MVP Tom Brady. Running back Melvin Gordon was seventh in rushing with just over 1,100 rushing yards in 2017. Lastly, wide receiver Keenan Allen had his breakout season last year finishing third in receiving yards last season.
In total yards as an offense, the Chargers ranked fourth behind New England, New Orleans, and Pittsburgh. Los Angeles merely trailed New England by 300 yards. But how can Los Angeles jump these three offenses ahead of them?
Allen was the only person on the Chargers roster to have over 1,000 yards receiving. If Tyrell Williams can get more receptions this year he can easily get over 1,000 yards. Williams did have over 1,000 yards receiving back in 2016.
Los Angeles was not far off from having the number one total offense last year. Another receiver stepping up to complement Allen can make up some of the yardage. Also, Gordon was great last season, but didn’t have many explosive breakaway scores. If Gordon can use his speed to create longer rushing or receiving plays, Los Angeles will become the number one total offense.
