NFL: 7 potential surprising cuts prior to the 2020 season

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Alex Mack

Dating back to his days with the Cleveland Browns, Alex Mack has been one of the most reliable centers in the NFL. Since he began his career in 2009 with the Browns, Mack has started in 165 of 176 possible games in his 11 seasons in the NFL.

Over the past four seasons, Mack has started in 64 consecutive games for the Atlanta Falcons, earning three straight Pro Bowl appearances from 2016-2018. Given his consistent production and chemistry with Matt Ryan, the Falcons likely don’t want to rid of Mack.

However, Mack turns 35 in November and is slated to be a $10.5 million cap hit in 2020. Not to mention, Atlanta took Mack’s eventual replacement in Matt Hennessy in the 2020 NFL Draft. Taking that into consideration, the Falcons could release Mack to create $8 million in cap savings while only incurring a $2.5 million dead cap penalty for 2020.
