Ranking the 7 most underrated NFL wide receivers for 2020

Tyler Boyd, NFL, Bengals

5. Tyler Boyd, Cincinnati Bengals

While you weren’t looking, as the Bengals went downhill and reached bottom with a 2-14 mark last year, Boyd has topped 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. He had 156 targets and 12 touchdowns over that span.

Boyd’s 90 receptions in 2019 were tied for 11th in the league, and tied for eighth-most among wide receivers (bet you didn’t know that?).

The Bengals drafted Joe Burrow No. 1 overall, so they now have a quarterback with great upside if nothing else. Boyd’s success out of the slot matches nicely with Burrow, as Justin Jefferson thrived and became a first-round pick operating there for LSU in 2019.

Via Cynthia Frelund of NFL Network:

There weren’t many bright spots in the Bengals’ offense last season (Joe Mixon was one of the few), but it seems Boyd isn’t getting the respect he deserves. He ranked sixth in the NFL last season with 661 receiving yards from the slot, per Next Gen Stats. When you add in the context of Cincinnati’s extremely subpar offensive line and A.J. Green’s season-long absence, Boyd’s impact starts to come into focus. For rookie QB Joe Burrow, Boyd’s on- and off-ball impact will be a key in the passing game.

After drafting Burrow, the Bengals came back in the second round and took wide receiver Tee Higgins. So Boyd is even further off the radar in some respects, with a case to be higher on this list.
