5 Reasons the Denver Broncos Are AFC Contenders

Possible stability at the quarterback position

As I mentioned earlier, since the retirement of then-franchise quarterback Peyton Manning, the Broncos have been unable to find a capable replacement. Even spending a first round pick on now their third-string quarterback Paxton Lynch.

So this offseason general manager John Elway went and made a splash in the free agency market. Elway went out and signed Case Keenum who was the top quarterback on the market besides Kirk Cousins. Keenum’s contract is expensive but also short so if he doesn’t work, Denver can get from up under his contract later on.

What Keenum can provide to this offense is stability at the most important position on the field. Keenum can do what Manning did in the Broncos’ Super Bowl winning season and much more. In his final season Manning threw only nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions. But he had a winning record of 7-2 in the games he started.

Last year with the Minnesota Vikings, Keenum had a winning record of 11-3 and threw 22 touchdowns to only seven interceptions. Now, with a potentially full season as the starter, if Keenum can just duplicate those numbers Denver should be able to be very successful. Keenum’s play this year will be the difference between another down year or playing far in the playoffs.
