Fantasy Football: Position-by-Position Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em Picks for Week 2

QBs to start in Week 2

Colts’ Philip Rivers (vs. Vikings): It was far from the debut that Philip Rivers wanted in Week 1 with the Indianapolis Colts. While throwing two inopportune interceptions that led to a surprising loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Rivers threw for 363 yards and a touchdown as well.

After his disappointing showing to begin the year, Rivers will get a great chance to bounce back against the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota’s defense had a ton of turnover — personnel-wise — and just allowed 364 yards and four touchdowns to Rodgers in Week 1.

Patriots’ Cam Newton (vs. Seahawks): Unlike Rivers, Cam Newton excelled in his first start with the New England Patriots in Week 1. In his first game in Josh McDaniels’ offense, Newton produced 155 passing yards on 15 completions and added 75 yards with two touchdowns with his legs.

There’s no doubt it was a welcomed sight to see Newton contribute on the ground again, giving him somewhat of a safe floor in fantasy football. The former NFL MVP will look to continue his success for the Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2. The Seahawks, despite adding Jamal Adams, surrendered 450 passing yards in Week 1.

49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo (vs. Jets): The only team to lose in the NFC West in Week 1 was the reigning NFC Champs, San Francisco 49ers. A large part of San Francisco’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals to begin the season was due to the performance of Jimmy Garoppolo.

Garoppolo looked out of sorts, completing only 57.6 percent of his passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns. After his mediocre showing against Arizona, Garoppolo is poised to rebound this week versus the New York Jets, who allowed Josh Allen to have the first 300-yard passing game of his career in Week 1.

Others QBs to consider in Week 2: Lions’ Matthew Stafford (vs. Packers), Bengals’ Joe Burrow (vs. Browns), Bears’ Mitchell Trubisky (vs. Giants)

QBs to sit in Week 2

Eagles’ Carson Wentz (vs. Rams): Not many teams are as beaten up by injuries already as much as the Philadelphia Eagles are. As a result of their injury-marred offensive line, Carson Wentz was sacked eight times, leading to the Eagles blowing a 17-0 lead over the Washington Football Team in Week 1.

Unfortunately for Wentz, it doesn’t get much better in Week 2, as he prepares to face Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams. Until the Eagles prove they can overcome the injuries on the offensive line and at wide receiver, then it’s wise to temper expectations for Wentz in fantasy football.

Broncos’ Drew Lock (vs. Steelers): There weren’t many quarterbacks that received as much hype as Drew Lock did during the offseason. The second-year quarterback for the Denver Broncos compiled a decent performance in Week 1 versus the Tennessee Titans, throwing for 216 yards and a touchdown.

Even if Courtland Sutton makes his return to the offense in Week 2, the Broncos face a stiff matchup in the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even though the Steelers gave up a modest 17.36 fantasy football points to Daniel Jones in Week 1, young quarterbacks never seem to fare well at Heinz Field — albeit there won’t be any fans on Sunday.
