NFL: 8 teams who could be most impacted by a salary cap decline

NFL Draft, Falcons, Julio Jones

Atlanta Falcons

For a team that already isn’t overly competitive, it’s troubling to see the amount spending the Atlanta Falcons already have dedicated for the 2021 season. A drop in the NFL salary cap would make it even more difficult for them to add impactful talent to the roster next offseason.

The Falcons’ core with talents like Julio Jones and Matt Ryan are signed through 2024. While that certainly is an advantageous situation, the rest of the supporting cast around could be quite underwhelming as Atlanta already has significant salary spending dedicated to the 2021 season.

There is the potential for some major consequences such as Todd Gurley experiencing a career resurgence, but the Falcons not being a position to pay him. Let’s not forget, Alex Mack, Charles Harris, Keanu Neal, and Takkarist McKinley are on the final year of their deals, too.

There does not appear to be a clear pathway out for the Falcons if they fail to have a successful season in 2020. They will be stuck in mediocrity for the near future even if they manage to hit on a majority of their draft selections.
