San Francisco 49ers: 5 Bold Predictions for the 2018 NFL Season

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

Dante Pettis Will Be a Household Name

The 49ers are currently without a number one receiver in their depth. Garçon is a possession guy. Goodwin is the deep threat. Taylor is the scrappy slot receiver that gets it done on third downs. Kittle is the red zone target at tight end. Each target plays a specific role in this offense.

However, one player is beginning to stand out at training camp. It’s none other than this year’s second-round pick, Dante Pettis.

On the final drive of practice, Garoppolo targeted the former Husky on the last three plays. The first went for a first down on a boundary catch against Witherspoon. The Buff got back at Pettis with a pass breakup on the next play. Then Pettis burned his former college rival on a 40-yard touchdown to end the day.

He’s been getting praise from everyone on the offensive side of the ball talking about how well he works. Backup quarterback, CJ Beathard spoke about how complete his game is at playing receiver.

“I think he’s going to be a great receiver in this league. He’s got great hands. He’ll come back to balls and make big-time catches. The last few days especially, he’s made great strides as this camp has gone on.”

The Washington University product is only getting started as he continues to show why he was worth the high draft pick. He’s already proving his worth as he competes with Trent Taylor for more reps on the offense.

And he has a chance to shine in the return game where he excelled as one of the best in the nation during his time in college. In his final year at Washington, he broke the all-time punt return touchdown record with his ninth touchdown return against Oregon.
